This site has had four colours all along — Naples yellow, olive green, grey, and peach red — and each one has a job: the yellow is the paper, the olive is the ink, the grey is what the machine is not yet sure of, and the peach red only ever marks what the machine sees. All of that is a human decision. None of it is in the numbers.

This is not a research finding and should not be read as one. There are no accounts, no sampling, and anyone can skew a cell. What is kept is a count of words per plate — a description of the people who happened to arrive, not evidence.

A machine can compute one thing here: relative luminance, divided. Two numbers, one ratio, something like 10.98 to 1. That is the whole of what it knows about this plate. It does not know that one of these colours is supposed to mean danger, that another is supposed to be paper, or which one makes you trust it.

We do not read colour that way. We read meaning before we read difference. Red is danger. Blue is calm. Yellow is paper — not because anyone decided it, but because our bodies have worked that way since before language. So the meaning of a colour is not in the numbers. It is in the people looking.

Six of the twenty-four plates are ones the machine refuses, and all six are plates where peach red is the paper. No hue reaches 4.5 to 1 against it at any tone. A person sees peach red and feels an alarm at once. The machine says only that it cannot read it. Both are right, and neither one can correct the other.
