Every one of these makes the same four moves: get a picture, find what matters, turn it into numbers, decide. Here is each one opened up — and where each one fails.

01

Face unlock

When you raise your phone, the front camera takes a picture of your face. Some phones also have an infrared projector that paints thousands of invisible dots to measure its depth. A neural network turns the picture into a list of numbers, and the phone compares that list with the one it made when you set it up. On a well-designed phone, the stored list lives in a protected part of the device and never leaves it.

  1. มองLook
Camera captures the face; some phones add infrared depth
  2. หาFind
Locate the face: eyes, nose, mouth
Numbers
A network turns the face into a list of numbers
Decide
Close enough to the stored list? Unlock. If not, ask for the PIN

What can go wrong

  • It is a threshold, not a certainty. Set it strict and it refuses you in bad light; set it loose and a sibling gets in. Some phone makers warn that twins and close relatives may unlock each other's phones.
  • Depth carries its own armour. Apple publishes that Face ID's matching happens in the chip's Secure Enclave, with a second network whose only job is catching photo and mask attempts. Phones that use an ordinary camera alone have no such layer — easier to fool, and banking apps will not accept them.
  • A mask, heavy glasses, a new beard: the numbers move. Apple also says that when a match fails but you immediately enter your passcode, it takes a fresh capture and temporarily augments the stored numbers to follow your changing face. This site never does any of this — recognising a particular face is exactly what we chose not to build.
02

QR code

A QR code is built for machines. Three big squares in the corners say “here I am, and this way up”; the small black and white modules between them are bits. The reader does not need to understand anything. It only needs to tell dark from light — which is exactly the instrument at the bottom of this page.

Light or dark
1Go gray, then make every pixel a 0 or a 1
Find the corners
1:1:3:1:1Spot the three corner squares by their 1:1:3:1:1 stripes
Read the grid
Straighten the grid and read each module as a bit
Check, then act
Repair damaged bits; if they check out, open the link or the payment

What can go wrong

  • Glare, a crease, low light: the light-or-dark step fails first. So QR codes carry spare bits to repair damage. The inventor defines four repair levels: L restores 7%, M 15%, Q 25%, and H — the highest — about 30% of the code.
  • The dangerous failure is not a misread. A sticker pasted over a shop's real code is read perfectly — and sends your money somewhere else. The machine checks that the bits are intact, not that the payee is honest. Before paying by PromptPay or any banking app, read the name the app shows you.
  • A code that reads perfectly is still only an address, not a guarantee. The reader opens the link inside it; it does not check that the page at the other end really belongs to your bank, and short links hide where they lead. Read the domain and the payee name before you confirm, every time.
03

Scanning a document

A banking app that photographs your ID card, an app that turns a photo of a page into text, the scan button in a notes app: all start the same way. Find the sheet of paper, flatten it, then read it. Reading — optical character recognition, OCR — is the part people notice. Finding the paper is where it can all go wrong first.

Find the paper
Edges, and the biggest four-cornered shape
Flatten
Stretch the four corners into a rectangle
Split
Clean up; split into lines, words and characters
Read
Recognise each piece; a language model — a word-prediction program — picks the likeliest reading

What can go wrong

  • Thai is hard for OCR in its own ways. Vowels and tone marks sit above and below the line, and words run together without spaces, so the reader has to guess where one word ends. ด and ต, บ and ป differ by a few pixels.
  • A white page on a white desk has no edge to find. Neither does a page in shadow. Try both in the bench below.
  • Numbers are the costly mistakes: a 3 read as an 8 in an account number looks exactly as confident as a right one. Good apps ask you to check. Check.

Chest X-rays

Hospitals in many countries now run software that reads chest X-rays and flags the ones that may show signs of disease — tuberculosis, a lung nodule — so a radiologist sees the worrying ones first. The World Health Organization has recommended computer-aided detection as one of its TB screening tools since its 2021 guidelines: a sorter for the doctor, never a replacement. The network was trained on many X-rays that doctors had already labelled. It does not know anatomy. It knows which patterns came with which labels.

Standardise
Size, contrast, which way up
Features
A convolutional network turns it into numbers
Score
A score per finding, often with a map of where it looked
Flag
Put it in front of a doctor, who decides

What can go wrong

  • Shortcuts. A network can learn which hospital or which machine an X-ray came from — a hospital that sees sicker patients may have a different scanner and different text in the corner — and score that instead of the lungs. Zech and colleagues showed pneumonia models could tell which hospital an image came from, and did not always perform as well at other hospitals (PLOS Medicine, 2018).
  • “Normal” means “nothing it was trained to find”. A rare disease missing from the training labels is invisible to it.
  • Trained on one population, used on another: age, body size and the mix of diseases differ from country to country.
05

Lane keeping

A camera behind the windscreen watches the road. Software finds the lane markings, works out where the car sits between them, and if you drift without signalling it beeps or gently turns the wheel back. It is driver assistance: you are still the driver, and a good car tells you when the system hands control back.

  1. มองLook
Frames from a forward camera, many a second
Find lines
From edges, or a network that paints lane pixels
Measure
Fit lines or curves; estimate offset and heading
Decide
Drifting? Warn, or nudge the steering

What can go wrong

  • Faded paint, rain at night, low sun dead ahead, old markings still visible after road works: the edge step sees all of these, or none of them. Try the Edges lens on the home page.
  • IIHS's real-world data finds lane departure warning does reduce police-reported sideswipe and head-on crashes. But IIHS's own dealership survey also found a sizeable share of cars with the system switched off — a system someone turned off protects no one.
  • Thai roads add their own: lanes that stop being lanes, motorcycles in the gap, markings that were never painted. It looks for lines, not for the world — it does not know the lane ahead is flooded. When it loses the lines it switches off, and a good car tells you so.

Self-checkout

Some self-checkouts and shop scales have a camera above the tray. Put down loose fruit with no barcode and it suggests what it might be. Underneath is the same trick as our training room: the picture becomes a fingerprint of numbers, and the machine looks for the products whose fingerprints are nearest.

  1. มองLook
A camera over the tray
Separate
Ignore the tray; keep only the item
Fingerprint
A network turns the item into numbers
Suggest
Show the nearest few products; you choose

What can go wrong

  • Lookalikes: limes and small green oranges, two kinds of mango. That is why it offers choices and lets you pick.
  • A plastic bag, a hand in the picture, a new product the shop forgot to add: the nearest fingerprint is still the answer, even when it is far away.
  • Commercial vendors fight this with hardware: Mashgin builds a 3D model of every item from several cameras, and says plainly that 95% accuracy still means staff stepping in on at least one transaction in twenty. Where the machine still has to guess is exactly where your check matters.

Crop disease apps

Photograph a sick leaf, get the name of a disease. These apps classify the photo against the diseases they were trained on. Plantix, the largest of them, says it has answered over 100 million crop questions — and still keeps a community of agricultural experts for the cases the model is unsure about: a person stays part of the loop. The app can help a farmer ask the right question sooner. It can also be confidently wrong.

Photograph
One leaf, or several
  2. หาFind
Find the leaf and the damaged patches
Score
A network scores every disease it knows
Answer
Show the top answer — ideally with its confidence

What can go wrong

  • Many early models were trained on leaves photographed one at a time on plain backgrounds. A field photo — many leaves, harsh sun, soil — is a different picture, and accuracy can drop sharply.
  • It can only name diseases it was taught. A nutrient shortage or a pest it never saw gets the name of something it did see.
  • Thai crops and Thai varieties may be rare in the training data. It is always fair to ask what an app was trained on.
08

Traffic and flood cameras

The cameras on this site were installed so people can watch roads and water. Agencies also run software on cameras like these: counting vehicles to time traffic lights, spotting stalled cars, reading water against a marked gauge. Enforcement cameras go further and read number plates. We count; we never read plates.

  1. มองLook
A fixed camera, the same view all day
Detect
SSDLite MobileNetV2)Find vehicles (here: SSDLite MobileNetV2)
Follow
Follow each one across frames so it counts once
Count, then act
Traffic report, signal timing, an alert

What can go wrong

  • Night rain turns headlights into long streaks; one bus hides three motorcycles. “Not detected” never means “not there”.
  • To a careless program, a camera that stops sending looks like an empty road. Ours says “no picture”, not “no cars”.
  • Who gets counted is a human choice. The detector that counts cars could follow a person; what stops it is rules made by people. Read ours, or watch it work on the cameras.
09

Try step one yourself

Two of the cases above begin by deciding, for every pixel, light or dark. Hold up a QR code, a page of a book or a sheet of paper, and watch the machine do it.

Light or dark is what a QR reader does first. Auto picks the threshold by Otsu's method (1979): the value that splits the pixels into two groups most cleanly. Slide it yourself and see when the code falls apart.

Find the paper is what a scanner does first. The largest light region gets a box and two numbers: how much of the frame it covers, and how fully it fills its own box. A flat sheet seen straight on fills nearly all of it. These are measurements, not a trained model's confidence — and a white wall will fool them.

Your camera or photo is processed in this browser only. Nothing is sent or saved anywhere. Without a camera, the bench uses a public one instead.
